The Musicians Union of Ghana has launched the Play More Gh campaign at the MUSIGA Presidential Grand Ball held on Friday December 22, 2017 at the Accra International Conference Centre. The launch was performed by the President of the Union, Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour. The Presidential Grand Ball was attended by President Akufo-Addo who extolled the prowess of Ghanaian musicians.
The Play More Gh campaign is an advocacy campaign by the Union to encourage more Ghanaian content on radio and television. The campaign involves the use of direct engagements with presenters and media organizations, social media activations and other platforms.
The campaign comes in the wake of calls for more Ghanaian content on our airwaves. It is to support steps being taken by the Ministry of Communications to pass an appropriate Broadcasting Bill that seeks to ensure over 70% of programming on our airwaves is Ghanaian content.
Another project of the Union that was launched at the Grand Ball was the Future Project or Youth Incubation Programme. This involves a select number of over 150 budding musicians from around the country who receive coaching and mentoring in addition to other support from the Union and selected leading artistes who engage with the youth.
The MUSIGA Presidential Grand Ball is annual fundraising gala event to support specific projects being undertaken by the Union. This year, the Ball is to support the establishment of an Endowment Fund for the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF) and the MUSIGA Academy which is a collaboration between the Union and the National Film and Television Institute.
A number of musical equipment and artifacts belonging to leading musicians like Agya Koo Nimo, Paapa Yankson and Ewurama Badu were auditioned at the gala event.
In attendance were the Chief of Staff, Madam Frema Opare; Minister of Information, Dr. Mustapha Hamid; former First, Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and business magnate, Dr. Kofi Amoah.
